BRRRRRRRRR….Happy Friday/Freezeday Ladies! Can I just go ahead and say it? I’m done with winter already. My feet are always frozen and can’t wait to be thawed this summer! Speaking of feet, let’s talk about stepping out of our comfort zones. In my opinion, this is the single most reason people fail to achieve meaningful change in their life. Whether it be fitness, financial, or in relationships. Crossing that comfort line is extremely difficult.“In our comfort zone, there is a sense of familiarity, security and certainty….When we step outside of our comfort zone, we’re taking a risk, and opening ourselves up to the possibility of stress and anxiety; we’re not quite sure what will happen and how we’ll react.” (C. Gregoire)In my opinion, starting a new fitness/weight loss program can throw you out of your comfort zone faster than any other activity. Here are the thoughts going through your head...-I’m new-I have no idea what I’m doing-I’m out of shape and I won’t be able to keep up-I might not fit inI understand these feelings and have experienced each one of them on my fitness journey. I empathize with the mindset from both the student and the Coach side of the equation. From my experience as a Coach at other gyms, Weight Loss Coach and gym owner—I’ve never encountered anyone who regretted their choice to start an exercise program. It’s true. Sure, I’ve been told from people that they’re sore after their first few times. (but they always come back) As a gym owner, a large part of my week is spent on consultations. Here’s some info that may or may not surprise you. (figures are cold leads-non referrals)-8 out of 20 people who initiate contact with me through our website never return my calls, emails or texts.-Of the 12 people who engage in communication with me 5 will sign up for a class pass or tour the fitness studio.-Of the 5 who sign up for the class pass, 3 will actually show up for their free week.-Almost everyone who shows up for their free week decides to become a member.Herein lies the constant struggle of the gym owner. We know there’s people who want and need our services. We know that we can help them become more fit and happy. It’s such a delicate dance. Our job is constantly refining the process of the member onboarding process. It’s what burns gym owners out. We know that if we can get them to show up for a few classes and help them put together a plan, they’ll be hooked. With this information I know that I need to be a counselor as much as a fitness instructor. I need to alleviate as much fear as possible. I’ll take them by the hand and help them step out of their comfort zone.In life, I’ve found that the hardest part of stepping outside of my comfort zone is taking that first step.
